Originally designed to highlight the difficulties of endoscopy, an endoscope, formed of an optical fibre system and a lens system transmitting the image from the objective lens to the viewer, must navigate the long and complicated bowels. The symbolism of the ginger root is intended to remind the viewer that although medical science techniques could be seen as ‘unnatural’ or ‘man-made’, the origins of medicine is natural. Ginger being a traditional herbal remedy for many gastro-realted illnesses.
